Summer Storm
As a photographer looking for dramatic landscapes, I have come to appreciate what a summer storm can provide. I don’t recommend trying to make photographs while rain and lightning crash down around you. However, after the storm passes, as the sun reappears from behind clouds, the light sometimes can be very dramatic.
I was treated to this phenomenon last week in the Sandhills of north central Nebraska. What made the after-the-storm light even better, is that the emerging sun was very near the horizon just before sunset. So not only did I get the dramatic affect of a dark ominous sky but the Sandhills were illuminated with that sweet golden-hour light of sunset.
Here’s a shot of Hackberry lake in the Valentine NWR after a summer storm last Saturday. The shot was made with the Canon 5D Mark II and Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L II at 125mm f/8.0 1/80s.
