I do not know how many geological formations in the US are named Chimney Rock – there are many. In grade school I learned of the one in Nebraska which gained fame as a landmark for early pioneers as they traveled west on the Oregon Trail.
Colorado has two Chimney Rocks that I know of. One is a spiritual place for the Pueblo tribe and recently was designated a national monument. I stumbled upon another one along CR 8 northeast of Ridgway, CO and was treated to a wonderful sunset in which to photograph it last week.
Thinking of Colorado’s Chimney Rocks on my drive home, I decided it was long past due for me to shoot Nebraska’s Chimney Rock. To breakup the 16 hour drive, I spent the night in Scottsbluff, NE and made a quick sunrise detour to Chimney Rock near Bayard, NE. The sunrise was rather unspectacular, but I was there so I took the opportunity to make a quick photograph.
Both shots were taken with the Canon 5D MK II and EF24-105mm f/4.0L. Thanks for looking.
