Sonoran Desert Photography Workshop

An Iconic Landscape

The Sonoran Desert is one of the most wildly diverse and fascinating regions in the world. Scenic Aperture will design an awe-inspiring Sonoran Desert Photography Workshop just for you! Our Sonoran Desert Photography Workshop takes place near Tucson, Arizona in a lush desert dominated by leguminous trees and many species of cactus, one of which, the giant saguaro, is the iconic symbol of the American west. These majestic plants are found only in the Sonoran Desert.

During this workshop we will focus on the spectacular Sonoran desert landscape.

Sonoran Desert Photography Workshop

North America is home to four separate and distinct desert regions; Great Basin, Mojave, Chihuahuan, and Sonoran. The Sonoran desert covers over 100,000 square miles of Arizona, California and parts of Mexico. The Sonoran Desert is the most biologically diverse of the four U.S. deserts

The Sonoran Desert Ecosystem

The Sonoran Desert has the greatest species diversity of any desert in North America. It is home to at least 60 species of mammals, more than 350 bird species, 20 amphibians, some 100 reptiles, and about 30 species of native fish. More than 2,000 species of plants have been identified in the Sonoran Desert.

More striking than species diversity is the tremendous variability in Sonoran Desert life forms, from columnar cacti to conifers, Gila monsters to pygmy owls, cyanobacterial soil crusts to native ferns. Landscape diversity in the Sonoran Desert rivals that of any other terrestrial ecoregion on Earth.

Ancient Cultures

In addition to its biodiversity, the Sonoran Desert is also noted for a number of human cultures. For thousands of years, people have been in this area from prehistoric Hohokam to modern-day ranchers. They hunted, planted crops, tended livestock and raised families, leaving their mark on the landscape. Rock art, in the form of petroglyphs and pictographs, can be found here.
